It might be the worst winter car of all time.

A few years back, in late November here in Detroit, I drove one after a blizzard. It was a test car for the dualtronic transmission, though it was basically a production car (nothing unproven on it). I had picked it up from an automotive journalist on a dry, sunny, fifty degree day and drove it home. I would drive it back to our office the next day. That night the temps dropped and we got several inches of really icy snow. It was a bad day for any car, but in the TT I nearly killed myself.

After totally losing control of it several times in just a few miles I turned right around and headed for home. But in those conditions in that car I was literally scared to make a left turn (I knew I'd be hit by another car) so I took this big looping route that was all right turns. It also took me through a local park with many twists and hills, and several small lakes right by the road. Honestly, I thought I was going to plow the car right into the water and die an icy death. And I was only driving 5 mph.

Just the lightest tap of the gas pedal in that car on snow and it spins sideways in an instant. I've never driven a car that was so bad in slick conditions. Clearly, it's not made for that, and on dry pavement it's awesome fun, but not for winter.

Sorry. Not to be a killjoy, but I thought I'd give you fair warning! AWD might help (I don't recall if the one I drove was or wasn't) and maybe it's improved a bit in subsequent generations, as my thrill ride was about four years ago when the dualtronic (or S-tronic I think they call it now) was just being introduced.

Fabulous transmission, by the way. And I'll stand by that even though I don't work for the same company any more.John Commonerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18002455279105165175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20197151.post-50943156331304985132009-01-08T01:54:00.000-05:002009-01-08T01:54:00.000-05:00great to know that you are having your dream car s...great to know that you are having your dream car soon~~ :)[SK]https://www.blogger.com/profile/01863360136363789539noreply@blogger.com
