How to create Tiny Planets on the iPhone

One of the most friequent questions I get asked on my blog is how I create my Tiny Planets. Tiny Planets are commonly referred to by there technical name, Stereographic Projections. The process involves a tripod and taking a series of overlapping photos using a fisheye lens. Each planet is made up of 20-30 individual shots then merged together with a program called PTGui creating a very large panorama.

The merged image is then brought into Photoshop and manipulated into the planet. The process takes a while and is complex, but produces a very detailed, high quality image (sometimes 1GB in size). While this process is tedious, a much easer process can but achieved using an iPhone and two apps.

1) Download "Photosynth"(free) & "Tiny Planets"(99¢) from the App store.

2) Launch Photosynth and start slowly moving the camera around. The App will capture the overlapping images. Be sure you complete a full 360º when taking the photos or the planet will not render correctly. Also be sure to capture the zenith (what's above you) and the nadir (under your feet).

3) When you've completed a full 360º panorama, hit finish and Photosynth will start stitching all the photos together. The process can take several minutes and you can choose to skip this process and do it at another time if you're anxious to keep photographing.

4) When the stitching is complete, you will able to pan around the photo within the app. To export the image to your camera roll, select "share."

5) Choose "camera roll"

6) You will be given the option to crop the image, I recommend you leave it as it is.

7) Next, launch the "Tiny Planet" App and load your recently exported panorama from your camera roll.

8) When the image is loaded, select the tiny planet button at the bottom left.

9) You now have your own Tiny Planet. Select "next" at the top right to export the image back to your camera roll.

With a little practice, you can get some nice planets. There are a few other Apps out there that will also do this process. The App 360Panorama has it's own Stereograph feature built in, however it doesn't capture as much area as Photosynth. The App "Retouch" will help with the removal of your feet/shadow in the Tiny Planet.

Review of Mini Wide Angle Lens for iPhone

I got a mini wide angle lens for my iPhone 4 as part of our annual secret santa exchange at work. The lens is a 2-in-1 and also acts as a macro lens. For $20, the quality is amazing. One problem, with the iPhone 4, the magnetic ring adhesive doesn't stick to the glass iPhone backing very well and keeps falling off plus I really don't like the look of having something stuck to the back of the phone all the time. I came up with a simple solution involving a mini suction cup and part of a binder clip. Since the lens is magnetic to begin with, it sticks right to the binder clip. I bent the clip a little with some pliers to get it just right. Works like a charm.

1893 Golding Pearl Printing Press

For the past year I've been wanting an old printing press. My life is surrounded by technology and I needed something more analog to occupy my time so I figured this would be a neat project. The problem however was actually finding a working printing press since most got destroyed when computers started taking over. I researched a lot of presses and got it narrowed down to a few models I'd settle for but like I said, it's not like there's an abundance of them around. I tracked down a guy that collected printing presses and had a few of the ones that I really liked so I emailed him to see if he'd want to sell off some of his collection. I was actually surprised to find out that he was just about to start downsizing. He was located 7hrs away in St. Louis so I made the trip over Thanksgiving weekend. The press was a mess, covered in 100+ years of oil/grease/dust/funk but it worked and it was complete so that was the main thing.

The press weighs around 500lbs and is an absolute bitch to take apart. I spent the last month cleaning and getting it presentable. I wanted it to be the focal point in my home office so I totally redid the room as well to really set the press off. Now I just have to learn how to use it.

How I was the target of a Craigslist iPhone scam

Jer and I decided to upgrade to the new iPhone 4s about a month ago. The deal was we would sell our old 3GS ones and break even on the new ones. All our friends were having success selling theirs on Craigslist within hours of posting so we figured there shouldn't be any problems. I posted the 16GB for $299 & the 32GB for $399. I had a response from a guy who said he was interested in the "product" I was selling. Since I didn't know which phone he was referring too, I responded telling him that I had two and which one was he interested in.

A day later, I got a call from the guy who told me that he was interested in both phones since he also wanted to buy one for his girlfriend. We agreed to meet the next morning to do the exchange. That following morning he called right on time and told me he forgot he had to take his son to softball practice and if we could meet later in the day, which I said wouldn't be a problem. He called back at 3:30 and asked if we could meet at McDonalds since his girlfriend was the manager there and he wanted to show her the iPhone before he bought it. I figured this was fine since it was a public place. When I got to the McDonalds, a hugh black man about 6'5" & 350lbs was sitting in a booth who smiled and said "you must be Bob?" I went and sat down and we talked for about 10-15 minutes. He talked about how he wanted to unlock the phones to put them on the Sprint network and how he was going to give his old iPhone to his daughter. He seemed like a nice guy who was a good father since he had taken his son to softball and his daughter was going to inherent his old iPhone. He mentioned that we just had to wait till his girlfriend got a 5min break to come out and take a look at the phones, which was fine. About five minutes later, he seemed to get frustrated with her and told me to wait a second while he went and showed her the phones.

Now, I've always thought of myself as a good judge of character and tend to trust people. I sat in the booth waiting for about 10 minutes (completely out of eyesight from where he had walked) and I start thinking to myself, "I bet that asshole isn't coming back." I sat a few minutes longer dreading what was about to happen. I went over to the cashier and asked where the guy with the iPhones was. The girl looked at me and said "what guy?" I told her the story and she told me I got scammed and that the guy had walked out the front door awhile ago. He was on foot, so I hopped in my car and drove around the neighborhood, which I realized was actually a bad part of town.

I was having a minor breakdown in the car. I had never been scammed before and I didn't care for this feeling of being violated. I managed to calm down and go back to the McDonalds and call the cops to file a police report. The cop was there within 10min and spent about an hour with me taking notes and running a trace on the number that the guy had used to call me. I was a mess the rest of the weekend.

The kicker:

The day before all this happened, I called up my insurance company (Allstate) and added a $1,200 mobile communications policy with $100 deductible that would cover theft/damage since I was paranoid about these new iPhones I had just gotten.

When I called Allstate to report my old iPhones stolen, I figured they would investigate me for insurance fraud. However, I had a police report, the original boxes with the serial numbers, both Craigslist ads that I had posted, a witness statement, and so on. I had amazing customer service with Allstate back in April when my BMW was totaled, now it was time to test how well their other insurance policies would work. The waiting game began and I was guessing it would take months before there was a conclusion.

After almost a month to the day I filed the claim, I got a call from Allstate that they had come to a settlement. My agent, Shana, started off telling me about depreciation and how they don't make the 16 or 32GB models anymore, I was bracing myself for a huge let down. She said that after the $100 deductible, I was going to receive a check for $732! That was exactly the outcome I wanted and I didn't even have to haggle with her!!!

Moral of the story

Be very cautious of Craiglist ads and meeting people. Also, Allstate is a fantastic insurance company and I highly recommend any type of insurance with them.

What’s the greatest gift your mother ever gave you?

Rarely do I use my blog to post personal things but I felt the need to share this with you. The other day I stumbled across a website that really got to me that asked the reader to submit the greatest gift their mother ever gave them. I’m very fortunate to have my mother with me as many of my friends have lost a parent. Life always seems to get in the way and I never have really told my mother how much she means to me (other then the standard “I love you”). When I read some excerpts from the story, I felt compelled to let my mother know what her greatest gift to me has been. I hear a lot of stories in the office where I work from clients whose parents are in a nursing home and suffering from dementia or Alzheimer's and it makes me think that you can never know what the future will hold and how important it is to make time for a loved one no mater how hectic life may get. So with that I share with you what I wrote my mother and if you're fortunate enough to still have your parents around, you should do the same.

I wanted you to know the greatest gift you ever gave me was a sense of humor. Looking back on my childhood, the thing that really stands out is how much you made me laugh. I never realized it till now but all my close friends have to meet the requirement of making me laugh otherwise I don't want them around. As I move through life and things change, it's the one thing about myself that will always remain consistent and I'm so grateful for it. Even though we don't talk all the time and sometimes weeks go by with out contacting you, each time I laugh, you're with me.

Review of New Polaroid 300

In the summer of 2009 I picked the wrong time to start my Polaroid obsession since the film would be discontinued later that year. Sure film is still around at 10 shots for $20+ a pack and it's getting a little better since the Impossible Project started remaking the instant film at a snails pace (8 shots for $14+). Needless to say when I read about the release of the new Polaroid 300, I was more then intrigued and even tho there has been mixed reviews, most of those reviews are from people that don't give two shits about the old style Polaroids so I just had to see for myself.

Unlike the classic Polaroids with the iconic square format, the Polaroid 300 camera takes an odd business card sized film which begs the question, "why the hell the small size?" The camera is ugly and doesn't come close to resembling any of the classic Polaroid cameras, in fact, the camera was designed by Fujifilm and Polaroid just rebranded it. The body is made of decent quality plastic, however the camera is very rounded and slippery (it likes to glide across tables and crash to the floor if you don't set it down gently). My Polaroid camera of choice is the SX-70 which allows manual adjustment of exposure and the option NOT to have a flash go off. The new 300 series has a flash that will fire no matter the setting, which includes 4 odd choices: indoor, cloudy, fine & clear. The fine and clear settings totally baffle me. The "clear" setting is for bright sun, however all my shots were way over exposed on this setting when shooting in bright sunlight (and no I wasn't shooting into the sun). I went through a whole pack of film (10 shots for $10) just testing the lighting conditions. I found this camera to be very finicky even more so then the SX-70. As for the colors, I'd have to say they're a little off with the 300 and you don't get that amazing vignetting effect or the vivid color saturation of the square format Polaroids.

Final Verdict:

My old 1970's era SX-70 is still by far the best choice for Polaroids and probably always will be (unless Lady Gaga actually does something worth while as creative director). But until Polaroid or the Impossible Project start making affordable film for the old school cameras, the new 300 will be my temporary fix for instant gratification.

One of my friends recently got into HDR photography so over the weekend we went to a few abandoned places throughout Cleveland including a hospital, factory & an apartment building. I've been doing HDR style of photography for years and I must be starting to get too picky with it because I only ended up taking like 40 shots during our adventure.

2010 Goodguys Nationals

15 years ago when I first started going to car shows, my photos were always of the entire car and nothing more. As the years went on I started focusing more on the lines of the vehicles. This year at the Goodguys Car show at the Columbus Fair Grounds almost all of my shots were of car details and only a handful consisted of the entire car. Abandoned Knox County Poorhouse

Built in 1878, this 40,000sf, four story tall building was at the time one of the largest buildings in the country. In 1953 the poorhouse was shut down only be be revived by a bible college then in the 1990’s the old poorhouse turned into the House of Nightmares were it was a hunted house one month out of the year. In the early 2000’s the hunted house was moved to a location in columbus because of the house being in disrepair.

The first time I visited the house there were some workmen outside, my guess is they use it for storage. During my second visit, the back doors were wide open so getting inside was not a problem. The right wing is totally collapsed inside to the point where any renovation is impossible. I was surprised to find very little vandalism throughout the building. One odd thing, in the top left wing, the smoke detector was going off very softly, however there was no electricity in the building.

How Allstate gave me a great settlement on my totaled BMW

On March 12th, my beautiful BMW 128i was totaled. I had the car almost a year to the day before it was taken away. Everyone involved walked away fine, no one was cited because it couldn't be determined who was at fault and the witnesses were no help. This was my first time ever filing an insurance claim and I was preparing myself for disaster. I have Allstate for auto and home insurance and I bought into their "accident forgiveness" and lower deductible for every year I wasn't in an accident so I was about to see how much of a gimmick it was/wasn't. Since the BMW was only a year old and was a custom order, it took them a little longer then normal to determine what to do.

As you can see nothing remains of the front of the car and the body took such an impact that it bent the roof in 6 spots and cracked the trunk lid. The first time I talked to the adjuster after he saw the damage, it sounded like they may try to repair it. For a few days I was very nervous wondering if I was going to have to remain making a $610 payment on a car that no one would ever want to buy. I finally got the call from a very nice guy who talked me through all the damage and how he was going to consider it a total loss. I felt relieved that I got out of the $610 payment (that was starting to be a burden after a year) but then I braced myself for what he was about to tell me, which is how much we're they going to value the car at.

I still owed 27K on it and from all the blue book sites, the car was being valued at only 32K and that was for a certified pre owned one. I was in disbelief that they we're giving me 36K for it!!!! That is over Kelly Blue Book by a few thousand! From everything I've found on the web, I couldn't find any stories that had a "beyond expectations" result.

After almost a month, I finally received a check for the remainder of $9,200 that will go towards a dawn payment on a new car (the car in choice is now a 2010 Camaro). My insurance also included a rental car for 30 days so I wasn't without a ride.

I did go back to get a pair of Oakleys out of the BMW that I had forgotten, but oddly enough they weren't there, along with some extra money that was taken, only pennies were left. I tried to add this to the claim but anything in the car goes under home owners insurance and since I had a $500 deductible on that, the Oakleys were a total loss.

So moral of the story, Allstate is more then fair with accidents and it's well worth the money for their add-on packages (I'm a gold member) and if you're ever in an accident, make sure you take EVERYTHING before it gets towed away because it's unlikely it will still be in the car when you return to see it.

1899 Mentor Reflex Camera

Yesterday I visited a few antique malls and managed to get this extremely rare 1899, German made, Mentor Reflex camera for $43. When I was looking at it at the mall, it wouldn't open up and seemed to be broken. When I got it home I carefully pried it with a butter knife and it popped open like magic. This is now the oldest camera in my quickly expanding collection, only problem is it's too big for my current display case so I have to hunt for another one.

Neglecting the Analog World

On a business trip a few weeks ago I did something I haven't done in years, I actually read a magazine. I've been so in-tune with drowning myself in the internet instead of reading a physical, analog periodical. Information is fed to me by way of videos and interactive media or better yet, cute diagrams that can basically sum up much of todays articles since everything seems to have a flow chart representing the idea which is being conveyed. All of this technology is contributing to rotting the part of my brain that use to take advantage of traditional media.

The magazine in choice was Wired, and like all the other issues, the current one consists of how to improve your life by means of digital technology and interacting with "virtual" friends rather then putting forth the effort of face to face rejection by your peers. A small part of me wants to revive the antique means of information intake while the other part can't wait for the iPad to fuel my digital needs.

The story of "Keep Calm And Carry On"

Millions of copies of the "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster were printed on the eve of World War II, but never displayed. Now the message has taken on a new lease of life in our troubled peacetime.

The simple five-word message is the very model of British restraint and stiff upper lip. Keep calm and carry on.

In 1939, with war against Germany looming, the Government designed three posters to steady the public's resolve and maintain morale. These featured the crown of King George VI set against a bold red background, and three distinctive slogans - "Freedom is in Peril", "Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory", and "Keep Calm and Carry On".

Two-and-a-half million copies of "Keep Calm" were printed, to be distributed in the event of a national catastrophe, but remained in storage throughout the war.

The message was all but forgotten until 2000, when a copy was discovered in a box of books bought at auction by Stuart Manley, a bookseller from Northumberland.

"I didn't know anything about it but I showed it to my wife. We both liked it so we decided to frame it and put it in the shop," explains Mr Manley.

"Lots of people saw it and wanted to buy it. We refused all offers but eventually we decided we should get copies made for sale."

Sales remained modest until 2005, when it was featured as a Christmas gift idea in a national newspaper supplement.

"All hell broke loose," says Mr Manley.

"Our website broke down under the strain, the phone never stopped ringing and virtually every member of staff had to be diverted into packing posters."

Soothing words

The poster was just one of hundreds produced by the Ministry of Information during the war to influence public opinion.

"The poster was a major medium in a way that it isn't now," says Professor Jim Aulich, an expert in propaganda art at Manchester Metropolitan University.

"It wasn't competing with television. It was one of the main ways of reaching people, through billboards and on public transport."

Rescued from obscurity after 70 years, the Ministry of Information's appeal for calm has risen to cult status. Mr Manley's store, Barter Books in Alnwick, receives an average of 1,000 orders a month from around the world. Customers include 10 Downing Street and assorted embassies. The design has been reproduced on T-shirts and coffee mugs, shopping bags and cufflinks.

It has also spawned imitators. One company has given it a twist, replacing the original slogan with "Now Panic and Freak Out".

To some, the world in 2009 seems as uncertain as it was in 1939, even if modern-day anxieties focus on redundancy and recession rather than bombs and the Blitz. Perhaps this is why the message still seems so relevant.

Of course, it might be difficult for the current government to come up with a poster with quite the same appeal during this time of economic stress. Context is everything, says social psychologist Dr Lesley Prince.

"If the government is in tune with you, you will listen. If you think the government is working on your behalf, you will listen."

This was indisputably the case during WWII, but is less clear-cut even in the most troubled period of peacetime.

Stiff upper lip

And a message of such powerful simplicity might not be so forthcoming these days. Today's government posters attempt to convince the public of an unappreciated danger and get them to modify their behaviour. The "Keep Calm" poster is merely an injunction to think another way and continue acting as you have always acted.

"It's very good, almost zen," says Dr Prince. "It works as a personal mantra now. If people are thinking 'I'm about to lose the house', it's good advice."

People are drawn to the calming Britishness of the message, says Mr Manley.

"It's interesting to look at the kind of places we often sell to; doctors' surgeries, hospitals, schools and government departments. It seems to strike a chord anywhere that works at a hectic pace."

Prof Aulich adds that the message has universal appeal.

"It speaks to peoples' personal neuroses. It's not ideological, it's not urging people to fight for freedom like some propaganda posters did."

Following the end of WWII, most of the posters are believed to have been pulped, never having seen the light of day. Only two original copies are known to have survived.

Thanks to a chance discovery in a dusty box of books, the soothing entreaty is finally having its intended effect, bringing comfort to a nation in turmoil.

iPad + iPhone Matching Wallpapers

If you've been reading my blog for a while you'll know that I'm a huge Apple fan (probably working for them didn't help matters). Almost every time Apple releases a new product, I'll be first in line to get it and the new iPad is no exception. I might not care for the name (altho it's growing on me) or the fact that it doesn't multitask (but that could be changed in an update) but those few downsides don't make up for the fact that it will be an amazing product right out of the gate just like the iPhone was. Lots of people are asking me why someone would even want it, well for me it will be a huge connivence. I usually do my web browsing while laying in bed with my laptop and I'm always worried it's going to slip and fall + this will be a great platform to show my photography on and when not in use it can act as a digital picture frame.

Since the iPad will allow you to actually have wallpaper viewable (unlike the iPhone that only displays it on the front screen) I figured I'd get a head start and create a few iPhone / iPad matching wallpapers. At first when I started making them, I was designing them vertical like the iPhone is laid out, however after watching the demo of how the iPad functions, I noticed by rotating it you will get more of the image on the top (when vertical) or sides (when horizontal). Since the resolution is 1024 x 768 on the device, I just made all the wallpapers 1024 x 1024 to compensate for rotation. Feel free to download the ones you want.

Blogger vs iWeb vs Wordpress vs Tumblr

Today I'm going to share with you my pros and cons of a few popular blogging platforms. To give you a little background; I started back in 2005 with this blog hosted on the blogger platform as more of a hobby and to see what I could create with html. As new services come along, I'll usually create a free account to see how it compares with the others. I currently manage 4 different websites, each on one of the above platforms.

Blogger (example: this site)

Maybe I'm just a little biased because blogger was the first platform that I coded on, but I've always had good luck using it and customizing the templates isn't too hard. I can usually change & customize a new design in a few hours.

Pros:

Has been around for a while so there is a large collection of templates available
Easy customization, provided you're not intimidated by HTML
Probably one of the biggest blog platforms out there, which means tons of help if you need it

Cons:

Html code in the templates can be a little buggy and outdated
not ment for anything other then basic blogging

iWeb (example: IdeaAttic.com)

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you'll know I'm a total Mac fan, so when Apple launched iWeb a few years back, I immediately jumped on the bandwagon and started creating websites left and right. At one point I had 7 iWeb sites, each with proper domain names. I was having too much fun creating sites and could create a site with 20+ pages in an afternoon. The application is very easy to use and any design I could come up with in my head, I could easily recreate it in iWeb. One of the problems however, is with all these great looking sites, Google has a very hard time indexing them so not too many people are finding you via search engines.

Pros:

Total drag/drop program
You don't need to know a single thing about HTML to make an amazing site
Great for a site that needs galleries

Cons:

SEO (search engine optimization) is basically non existent, even with programs like iWeb SEO Tool
If you want to add flash or some advanced HTML customization, you usually have to jump through hoops (providing you wanted to do something that the webwidgets can't handle)
Limited templates
Proprietary, unlike the other services, iWeb is an actual application that runs on newer macs and is intended to be updated with a single computer unlike web based blogging services.

Tumblr (example: i-got-sidetracked.tumblr.com)

I personally feel tumblr is more about sharing interesting images/photography then anything else. Sure it has features to "blog" or write something witty, but the main purpose is to see something cool, retumble it (repost it), and move on. Now you might be thinking, why the hell would anyone care to do this? It has majorly boosted traffic to my portfolio. How? I'll submit some of my photography to a few "best photo" type tumblrs every few days (example) and hopefully they will post my image along with any contact information I provide. When other people see that image, they may retumble it and so on...so my photography spreads like wiled fire along with my contact info linking back to my portfolio, which then in turn drives new traffic to my portfolio, boosting my rankings in google. More traffic means more potential clients that might hire me to do photo shoots. (it's all about networking for $$$)

Pros:

Super easy to use
Some of the best looking templates
works great on mobile devices

Cons:

most templates lack basic services such as comments or tag searching
can be a pain to extensively modify the templates
still too new for most people to grasp full potential

Wordpress.org (example: RejectedMemories.com)

I was first exposed to wordpress at work when I was given the task to redo our law firms website. I figured I had a fresh start so I wanted to choose the correct platform. Our site was to have 50+ static pages that wouldn't be updated often, but in order to keep the site "fresh" the attorneys wanted to do weekly blogs. Wordpress.org mixes static and blog pages quite nicely, not to mention that it is major in helping natural SEO. Like all the other platforms, templates are plentiful, however I went with a paid version called headway which is a mix between the WYSIWYG iWeb editor & blogger. Plus the headway theme adds TONS of options for SEO way beyond the basic free templates. In two weeks after redesigning the firms site in wordpress with headway, our site traffic has more then tripled with just the basic built in SEO.

Pros:

Great templates provided you pick the right one with good code
ease of use
Can mix blog with multiple site pages (about, contact, gallery, etc)
Search engines tend to find wordpress.org site easier since they aren't on a subdomain like blogger, tumblr, etc.

Cons:

you have to pay for your own domain/server space (godaddy makes this very easy tho with their wordpress package)

My conclusion; all 4 of the above platforms have a special place in my heart, but if you are just starting out with a serious blog/site for a business or your main focus is on traffic then wordpress.org is hands down the way to go. If you looking for fun and not too much brain power, sign up for tumblr. Want to be totally creative and show off to your fiends, then spend an afternoon in iWeb. And if you want a totally free way that will allow you to be a little creative but reserved (provided you are 0-basic with html) then get yourself a blogger account.

Droste Effect

The other day while surfing the net, I discovered the Droste Effect which is where an image depicts a smaller version of itself in a place where a similar picture would realistically be expected to appear. I've seen these types of images before but never knew what they were called or how they were created. Well, much like my months of obsessing on how to make Tiny Planets, I just had to figure out this Droste effect. Almost all the info I found gave instructions on how to create them on a PC, but I'm on a Mac and had to figure it out for myself. There are some free programs out there that say they work on Mac, but not the latest operating system. I finally found a free program from Adobe (yes, I used the words, "free" and "Adobe" in the same sentence) called PixelBender that does an amazing job. The hard part is finding an image that will work seamlessly, but after hours of fooling around with the program, I got a few decent ones.

Vintage Photography

If you've been reading my last few blog posts you'll know that I'm on a film kick all of a sudden. The other day I ventured to the antique store again to search for some vintage photos. About 99% of them were of people (which I could care less about), but tucked in the back were a few landscape shots. I managed to find 7 of them that all seemed to match and decided to frame them up. Each photo was 10¢, just a cheep idea for anyone who wants some original vintage art work.

The following images are the ones I found. The one had writing on the back of Royal Gorge Point Lookout, Black Mountain, Oct-13-48.

With the new purchase of my large format Studio Camera, I'm now obsessed with film again. I've taken Black & White photography in high school and in college and I've always loved being in the dark room and developing and manipulating the images. The only problem is I don't have the space to set up a correct dark room so I'll have to wait till I build a house to have one. In the meantime, I'm collecting pieces that I'll need. I loved playing with the chemicals, and seeing what odd results I could come up with. The following images are from 35mm film that I did in college (2003?) when I was just starting out with photography. I would purposely scratch the negatives and develop in the wrong chemicals to get that vintage look.

The other day I was browsing through an antique store in downtown Columbus and under all kinds of crap, wedged way in the back was an old wooden camera. I contemplated getting it but instead went back home to do some research to see if it was worth the price. I couldn't really find too much info on it other then it was called a Studio Camera. I loved the way it looked and went back today to have the shop owner hoist it up so I could go over it. The camera is made of either Cherry or Mahogany and the craftsmanship is impressive, I was also impressed that the camera was still in good condition. There was a tag hanging from it that read "Used in a photo shop at Niagara Falls to take photos of visitors." I figured what the hell, it looks cool and would be an awesome addition to my growing camera collection.

When I got it home, it took me a few hours to clean it up. I didn't want to get it too perfect using pledge or polish on it as it would loose that patina. The bellows (the accordion looking thing) is in good condition without light leaks and it even came with a second adapter for Polaroid film.

After a little more digging I found that the camera was made between 1907-26 but no way of knowing for sure the actually year. I'm now after a matching stand for it. The antique shop had one but it was 3 times the price of the camera so there was no way I was forking over that kind of cash for it.

My Inspiration

A few weeks ago my boss had a brain storm about doing a ton of videos for our website and he wants me to be in charge of shooting, editing, and web updating. Only problem is I know not a single thing about video.

The videos are going to be mostly client testimonials, our attorneys giving case examples and such ranging from 2-5min. Everything has to be done in the best way possible so my boss just bought me a 27" Quad-Core i7 iMac, Final Cut Studio, Sony EX1R plus all the lighting and accessories I need to make it look super professional...and he wants me to be good at it by the beginning of next year, which is a few weeks away.

At first I was overwhelmed (still am) and wasn't liking the new duties I was given, until I saw some videos by Andrew Zuckerman. Andrew has an amazing eye and I love his simplistic videography. I've analyzed his "behind the scenes" videos of the way he has his lighting and studio setup and I'm going to try my best to mimic this.

If any of you reading this are into video editing and can give me some tips on lighting, I'd be grateful to hear them.

Camera Collection

I finally got around to photographing my current camera collection. I currently have 16 and I'm thinking I'll stop at around 20. Most of the cameras are in perfect condition, I even have the original cases for several of them. Film has been discontinued for most, however I still use my SX-70 (green one) and my Polaroid Land Cam (blue stripe one). If you're interested in starting a camera collection I would recommend thrift stores and antique fairs. For those of you looking for polaroid instant film, Polarpremium.com has some and often runs promotions.

Today I'm finally getting around to a printing project that I've been putting off for months. Back in the spring I did a barter with a artiest friend. The agreement was I would photography, print and mat a series of Tiny Planets of his parents farm in exchange for a custom painting (he sells them for lots of $$$). I'm printing a total of 16 and while loading up my printer I thought to myself what a n amazing printer it's been. About 5 years ago I bought a Canon i9900 large format printer that does 13x19" prints using 8 ink tanks. The quality is perfect, colors are dead on to my computer screen and it's super efficient on the ink.

This also got me think what an kick-ass system I have set up. So I now share with you, my work space:

When I worked at Apple, we had a storage room with old window displays (notice some of the old Apple stuff in the images above). We were given the go ahead to trash everything in the room, so I asked my boss if I could have this light box. It use to have a sign in it that said iTunes 99¢ and my boss said I could have it as long as I got rid of the sign. This light box has two pieces of acrylic, one frosted and the other is clear. The iTunes sign was sandwiched between the two so it came out easy. When I got it home, I masked off an Apple logo and paint splatter and used acrylic paint for the red/orange. At the time, Apple was running an iTunes commercial with Eminem, this is where I got the idea.

Lost days of snowmobiling

While browsing some sites I stumbled across this bad boy. When I was a kid my father would go through toy phases. First it was boats, then camping (with the fancy travel trailers), then 4 wheelers (even tho we lived in suburbia), then came motorcycles and hotrods and among all of these were the 2-3 brief years of snowmobiling. My father never bought anything used. We had the top of the line Arctic Cats that were fast as hell. I was young, maybe 7 or 8. I remember travailing for hours just to be in the cold, on these snow rockets. I would usually rid with my father, only I would sit the opposite direction facing backwards so I can tell dad when mom would get stuck in snow drifts. I remember eating at some log cabin style hole-in-the-wall bar in the middle of nowhere when we we're almost frost bitten from riding all day. I got hot chocolate and chicken fingers. I miss that time in my life. I haven't thought about it for years.

2009 Highball Halloween

Here in Columbus on Halloween, the city shuts down part of High Street and has costume contest with a huge stage, guest judges (from Project Runway) and cash prizes; the show is properly titled Highball Halloween. This was the second year for it and 6 of use decided to coordinate our costumes and go as a vintage Night of the Living Dead Circus. Our cast: Mike went as the Strong Man, Nicki went as a Lion Tamer, Sharon was our ring master, Marcy was a fortune teller, Jer & I were clowns. Sharon and I spent 4hrs doing everyones makeup, not bad for never painting faces before. We got stopped ever few feet for photo ops, and we managed to get in the finals for the custom contest, only to be beat out by the Devil who one $1,000. My past Halloweens never came close to anything this elaborate, definitely a great time!!

For the most part these images are unedited, shot with the amazing 50mm lens.

Print-On-Demand with MagCloud

I recently stumbled across a great online print solution called MagCloud where you upload a PDF of a magazine layout, and magcloud will do a print-on-demand for you....cheep. At 20¢ per page, full bleed, in color, high quality and saddle stitch bound, the results are impressive. You can create the layout in any desktop publishing software such as Quark, InDesign, Pages, Word, etc. MagCloud even gives you templates to start with, making the layout process a cinch. The best part? Not only is this service free to signup for, but after you upload the PDF, you can set a markup and actually sell your magazine on their website! For each PDF you upload, you can request a free proof (just pay $1.90 for shipping) which takes less then 5 days to receive. Everyone I show the 40 page proof to is blown away when I tell them the cost is $8. What's the catch? The Number of pages has to be a multiple of 4, can't print more then 100 pages, only one size of 8.5x11, but big deal right?

I have several other magazines I'm working on, including one of Polaroids.

Blogger vs. Tumblr

Over the past few weeks I've toyed with the idea of switching this blog over to the tumblr platform. Reasons? Tumblr has some very cool templates and it's a breeze to create a post from an iPhone. Tumblr seems to be more about community, where it's encouraged to "repost" from someone else's blog, this in-turn drives more traffic to your blog (which is great when you're trying to promote your photography). However tumblr has some faults, unless you're a html/xml/css coding whiz, adding standard features that are found in blogger, like comments, are a pain in the ass. Tumblr has only been around since 2007 and the features are still in the infancy stages.

Blogger on the other hand has been around since 1999 and is now owned by google which owns the world. (I've always wondered if blogger has precedence in the google search engine over other blogging platforms?) Since the platform is in the mature stages, customization is endless, however most is built on old html code and the "slickness" just doesn't seem to be any comparison to tumblr blogs.

I took a stab at trying to switch over to tumblr but I ran into some snags. First, only a few tumblr templets give you the option for comments, and I NEED to have a comment feature (cuz I love hearing from you guys). There's a free service called Disqus that allows you to add comment options to tumblr providing you are somewhat familiar with coding and that the template you choose doesn't have jacked up code running throughout. Disqus has the option to take all the current comments that people have left in blogger and transfer them over to the Disqus servers which then can be embedded into tumblr. This sounds good in theory, but is complex in practice.

The next dilemma is I wanted to keep the feature "Linkwithin" which is what you see at the bottom of each of my post. This allows you to discover past blog post that are similar in nature to the current post. Linkwithin is not compatible with tumblr, which is a shame because tumblr has a HORRIBLE archiving structure and it makes finding old post very daunting. The last snag was with tags. For each blog post you can "tag" it with key words like "photography" or "design" which makes finding like post easy. Again, depending on which template you choose in tumblr this can be easy or hard. I have yet to find a tumblr template that includes at bare minimum comments and tags (maybe I'm not looking hard enough?)

So with that I decided to stay with blogger and just take some of the design aspects of tumblr and transfer them over which was a lot easier. But I couldn't just give up on tumblr so I created two blogs on their platform.

I Got Sidetracked, which is just a bunch of random cool images I find on the web, with little or now text.
iPhone Photography, Since tumblr is very easy to update with the iPhone, I created a gallery of nothing more then my iPhone pics.

Awesome iPhone Dock - AirCurve

Over the weekend I upgraded my first generation iPhone to the new 3Gs. The only accessory I have for my iPhone is a dock that I keep on my night stand for when I use my phone as an alarm. Well, like all things Apple, the old accessories aren't compatible and I wasn't about to spend $29 on a stupid piece of plastic just to hold my phone. After some hunting I found the perfect solution, the Griffin AirCurve. Based on the way sound travels through a horn, the AirCurve amplifies the iPhones sound all while looking cool as hell being made out of thick acrylic. I found it on Amazon for $15 and it's worth ever penny.

After experiencing how cool this is, I now need to hunt down an old gramophone to play all the old vinyl I have laying around. I'm all about retro all of a sudden.

Why iStockphoto Sucks:

Several years ago I set up a free account with iStockphoto selling stock photography. At the time, almost all of my submissions were accepted, people started buying my images and I was racking in the $$$. Lately the company has been really pissing me off. Their method for uploading photos is less then efficient and a pain-in-the-ass to navigate. They should take a cue from flickr and come up with a standalone application where you can batch upload images. Furthermore, only about 1/5th of my images are now getting accepted. They send me responses as "no clear focal point" (when the image is that of a texture or landscape) or speculating that I'm using an inadequate camera that can't process high res images. (I'm using a Canon 50D bitches)

As I browse through a random selection on their site, I notice tons of images that have gotten approved that based on their requirements, shouldn't have.

And now I'm starting to get emails from them saying: "we regret to inform you that your image has been deactivated based on trademark protection".... on images that have been uploaded way back in 2005 and on images that have been making me money.

So iStockphoto, if you listening, your approval people suck along with your frustrating website. You're not fun to use anymore :(

Hi Joy, thanks for contacting me. As you can see by my blog post, I'm not the only one that feels iStock has gotten ridiculous in their regulations. In fact this morning I got a comment that basically sums it up "looks like it's a blanket ban on any photograph of anything man-made, as it may constitute a design infringement blah blah. odd decisions."

I worked for Apple Computer for 4.5 years as a Creative trainer and I use to promote iStock to all my clients, and they were all impressed by the concept. Ever since iStock was bought out by Getty things have been too strict. I remember where the basic idea of the site was anyone with a point-n-shoot could upload and there was a good chance that 80% of the image would be accepted. I'm having a hard time distinguishing iStock from Getty stock. The site just isn't fun anymore, unless I'm missing something, the uploading of images is less then efficient. And for how strict everything is, I'm really not making much $$ off my efforts.

I do appreciate you contacting me, it shows that you do care about your contributors and I do realize that regulations don't change over night. I hope there is something in the works to loosen the choke hold a little.

Thanks for getting back to me.

We definitely do care about our contributors and our clients and try to do what is best for both parties. Unfortunately, there are some circumstances where it’s not possible to make both sides happy. In order to protect our clients and ensure that the images they’re using are free and clear of any trademark, copyrights or privacy right infringements, we’ve been required to tighten up our inspection processes and be more stringent on images that may pose a legal risk. While I can understand your frustration with some of our new processes, please know that we are doing it to protect you, the contributor, our clients and ourselves from any potential claims.

In the last few months, we have made numerous changes that I understand may be very frustrating to contributors, including the requirement of a model release for contextual images of people. In this situation, again, we are trying to protect the contributor and the client at the same time. If we accepted an image of a person whose face wasn’t identifiable in the image, but their tattoos were, there is a possibility that the person may be identifiable to their own family or others. In a case like this, if you didn’t have a model release you, as the contributor, could be at risk of a lawsuit because you didn’t have the rights from the model to sell their likeness for commercial purposes. We definitely don’t have a blanket ban on any photograph that includes anything man-made. As always, we continue to require contributors acknowledge that we do not accept images that infringe on copyright, trademark or rights of privacy. In addition, if an inspector finds there may be a copyright or trademark on the man-made item (or anywhere else in the image), the image will be rejected. This doesn’t mean that we won’t take a second look at it. If you can provide us information that no copyright or trademark exists, we will definitely re-evaluate the image. We also do offer a service called “Scout”, which allows you to submit rejected images for a second review. (3 per month) If you wholeheartedly disagree with a rejection, Scout is more than willing to take a second look. If the rejection is upheld by Scout, Scout will provide further information on the rejection to assist in explaining the rejection and how you may be able to correct it in future.

In regards to upload issues, we are currently working on improving our upload process and do offer the following plug-ins that will provide an easier way to bulk upload your images. The plug-ins are iPhoto, Aperature and Adobe Lightroom. You can find these by clicking on the “Upload” link and then about halfway down the page in the middle there’s a header called “Contributor Software”.

I want to assure you that we are continually working to improve our site and we do care about our contributors. I can appreciate how frustrating all of these changes can be, however the industry and laws associated with it are constantly evolving which means we also have to evolve in order to protect the interests of all of our clients and contributors.

So I'm still frustrated with the regulations, but I am impressed that Joy actually contacted me. It does show that while the company is strict, they are doing the best they can.

I probably won't upload anymore images to iStock, but I will leave the current one up (until they get banned). I only ever posted the images I really didn't care for since I basically loose the rights to them and it's not worth the time and effort to retouch and go through all the B.S. just so I can make $6 on an image.

A few months ago I was contacted by a publisher who had seen my photography on a website that I designed for a small local business and they wanted to use my images for an article. The magazine just got mailed out. I was very surprised to find I made the cover plus two full page images and they ended up using like 15 shots. Great start to my long weekend :)

The power and performance are made possible by combining a fuel-efficient 3-cylinder turbodiesel with one electric motor on each axle. The intelligent combination of these units, together with precisely controlled energy management, simultaneously enhances the dynamic performance and the efficiency of the car. Overall system output is 356 horsepower, and peak torque is 590 lb-ft. The special arrangement of the two motors and diesel engine allows all-wheel drive when driving in all-electric mode. The result is minimum power loss and a harmonious transmission of the power available under all conditions.

In its design, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics for the first time conveys the dynamic look of a BMW sports car to a hybrid vehicle. Developed with decades of experience in Motorsport, the body of this unique sports car is a result of intelligent lightweight technology and aerodynamic efficiency. In the design of the interior, the focus was likewise on both the fascinating driving experience and, in particular, on transparent, hands-on technology and maximum reduction of weight.

Turbodiesel engine with unprecedented specific output.

The combustion engine is a cutting-edge turbodiesel featured for the first time in the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car. Displacing 1.5 liters on three cylinders, the engine consistently follows the downsizing principle of using a relatively small engine combined with a turbocharger to reduce fuel consumption.

Through its compact dimensions, the 3-cylinder fits conveniently in front of the rear axle like in an agile mid-engine sports car, despite the two seats at the rear. Fuel is injected by the latest generation of High Precision Direct Injection, and the turbocharger features variable intake geometry for maximum efficiency. Engine output is 163 hp with peak torque of 214 lb-ft.

The specific output of 109 hp per liter sets a new benchmark in diesel technology. The power delivered by the turbodiesel is conveyed to the rear axle by means of a double-clutch transmission (DCT). This advanced transmission technology, which already offers a particularly dynamic driving experience in BMW’s M3 and Z4 Roadster, allows the driver to shift gears without the slightest interruption of power. BMW Vision EfficientDynamics features a newly-developed version of BMW’s DCT with six speeds for maximum efficiency and flexibility.

Two electric motors for full-hybrid drive.

The combustion engine is supplemented by two electric motors. Consistently applying the BMW ActiveHybrid philosophy, development engineers followed the principle of “Best of Hybrid,” choosing the optimum combination of a hybrid synchronous motor on the front axle and a full-hybrid system at the rear.

In this concept, the driver benefits from the efficiency of the electric motors over a far wider speed range than with a conventional hybrid car. The rear axle comes with a second-generation full-hybrid system corresponding to the technology in the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 production model. The compact electric motor positioned between the diesel engine and the DCT outputs a consistent 33 horsepower and is able to reach a peak of up to 51 hp. Maximum torque for the rear electric motor is 214 lb-ft, the power, either supporting the diesel engine or in all-electric motoring. When coasting or applying the brakes, the electric motor acts as a generator and feeds electric power to the lithium-polymer battery in the car. The electric energy developed in this way is therefore captured without any additional consumption of fuel through the principle of Brake Energy Regeneration. Energy wasted on the brakes of a conventional car is thus saved within the new power system for subsequent use in driving the car.

A second electric motor acts on the front axle. This engine, a hybrid synchronous motor, offers continuous output of 80 horsepower and peak torque of 162 lb-ft. Extra power of 112 horsepower is available for a period of up to 30 seconds, and, for a 10-second “burst,” the electric motor is able to develop 139 horsepower. The power is transmitted through a 2-stage, single-speed reduction gearbox.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is able to run completely under electric power, with the power of the turbodiesel engine alone, or through an infinite combination of the three power sources. Depending on driving conditions, the two electric motors may be used both for accelerating and for regenerating energy when applying the brakes and while coasting. This principle ensures efficient energy management, with the charge status of the lithium-polymer battery constantly remaining within the optimum range. When accelerating, the electric motors help to boost the car for even greater performance, ensuring immediate response and a significant reduction in fuel consumption. For a short time, such as in passing maneuvers, the cumulative maximum output of all three engines increases to 356 hp, with maximum torque generated by the three engines reaching 590 lb-ft.

Lithium-polymer battery for electrical energy.

The energy cells featured in BMW Vision EfficientDynamics are housed in a chassis element running from front to rear through the middle of the car. The front unit is the lithium-polymer complex, an ongoing development of the lithium-ion battery. Overall, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics comes with a total of 98 lithium-polymer cells, each offering a capacity of 30 amp/hours and developing continuous output of 600 Amps at a voltage of 3.7 V. For a period of 30 seconds, each cell is even able to develop maximum output of 1,200 Amps.

Serial arrangement of the lithium-polymer cells serves to generate nominal voltage of 364 volts, the gross storage capacity of the battery is 10.8 kW/h. With an unusually high discharge capacity of 80 percent, the battery delivers 8.6 kW/h for driving the car. This superior performance comes on overall weight of the entire energy storage system of just 187 lb. A further advantage is that through their optimum dimensions tailored to the specific qualities and features of the car, the lithium-polymer cells, together with the operating strategy chosen with a concept of “forward looking” energy management, reduces the thermal load acting on the battery to such an extent that there is no need for active cooling.

Plug-in solution: convenient charging of the electric power system from a conventional power socket.

Brake Energy Regeneration captures electric power generated while driving without additional fuel consumption, which is subsequently used to supply power to the electric motors and on-board network. A further option is to connect the lithium-polymer cells to a conventional power socket for a simple and efficient charge process, using a plug-in connector in the front-right wing of the car. Connected to a standard EU power outlet (220 V, 16 Amps), the system requires a maximum of 2 ½ hours to fully charge the lithium-polymer cells. And wherever a power source with higher voltage and amperage (380 V, 32 Amps) is available, the charge time is an even shorter 44 minutes.

In addition to electrical energy storage, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics comes with a conventional fuel tank at the rear end of the central chassis tunnel, offering a capacity of 6.6 gallons. Running on diesel fuel alone, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is able to cover a distance of approximately 400 miles with its combustion engine. Benefitting from an extra range of up to 31 miles in the all-electric mode, the car offers an overall range of approximately 431 miles. As a result, this unique concept car offers all the requirements for using energy with maximum efficiency and at the same time experiencing the dynamic performance typical of BMW without any restriction of everyday driving qualities.

Performance, fuel efficiency and emission management opening new dimensions in hybrid technology.

The power delivered by the two electric motors and single diesel 3-cylinder engine gives the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept a level of performance superior to anything provided so far by a hybrid vehicle. Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h, for example, comes in just 4.8 seconds and the car could exceed its electronically-limited 155 mph top speed.

At the same time fuel efficiency and emission management now reach a standard only achieved, if at all, by far less powerful small cars conceived for city traffic and short distances. Applying the criteria of the EU test cycle, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics offers average fuel consumption equal to 62.6 mpg. CO2 emissions, in turn, are 99 grams per kilometer. These consumption and emission figures are measured on a consistent internal power balance, meaning that the batteries and storage media for electrical energy maintain the same charge level throughout the entire test cycle (with the same level at the beginning and end) and are charged while driving only by the car’s on-board systems.

As a plug-in hybrid, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is able to cover the entire drive cycle for measuring fuel consumption also with its combustion engine completely switched off. Then, to subsequently charge the lithium-polymer cells to the same status as when setting off, all the driver has to do is connect the car to an external power grid. To determine the consumption of electric power, the only requirement is to compare the charge level of the battery before and after the test cycle. Applying this measurement process, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car consumes 17.5 kW/h per 100 kilometers, equal to a CO2 emission rating of just 50 grams per kilometer in the EU test cycle.

To determine the total volume of CO2 emissions when driving in the all-electric mode, new legal standards for measuring the level of fuel consumption are currently being prepared for hybrid and electric cars with a plug-in power supply. Applying this calculation method, the CO2 emission ratings generated by BMW Vision EfficientDynamics are reduced further to just one-third of the original figure of 99 grams per kilometer. Clearly, this significant reduction of emissions opens up a new dimension in BMW’s EfficientDynamics development strategy in this unique concept car.

Aerodynamic qualities reflecting BMW’s Motorsport experience.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics also takes a new approach in its design and streamlining, the body and the interior clearly expressing the unique combination of supreme efficiency and the sporting performance of the brand. Following BMW’s design language, this concept car visualizes both highly efficient aerodynamics and intelligent lightweight construction.

In its design, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics differs from the usual low-emission car concepts. The principle of “form follows function” is not just for the overall look of the car, but embraces each and every detail. Measuring 48.8″ in height and boasting a sweeping, arch-like roofline, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics offers the slender silhouette of a classic Gran Turismo. With the combustion engine fitted in front of the rear axle, the designers have succeeded in giving the car a very low front end, with the flow of air being further smoothened by active louvers in front of the radiator, which close completely when the need for cooling air is low. This efficient function follows in the footsteps of the active air flap control already used as a feature of BMW EfficientDynamics in some of BMW’s current production models. As a further highlight, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics guides air smoothly and exactly as required into the car through an active air intake at the front.

Numerous details in the design of the body are based on the know-how BMW has gained in Motorsport, a number of body elements serving as air deflectors and guide vanes. Designed as ducts, for example, the A-pillars serve to channel the flow of air in the same way as the rear lights with their wing profile. The floor of the car is fully covered from front to rear and from one side to the other, thus maintaining a smooth surface to avoid any air swirl liable to increase fuel consumption. Slender openings around the front air dam guide the air flowing specifically into two closed ducts leading inside the front air dam to the wheel arches where the air comes out again through a very slim aperture at high speed, flowing just next to the outer wheel flanks. This air jet rests on the front wheels like a curtain and is therefore referred to most appropriately as the “air curtain.” It provides a highly stabilizing effect.

Overall vehicle concept for a drag coefficient of just 0.22.

To further optimize the aerodynamic qualities of the entire vehicle and keep rolling resistance to a minimum, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics comes with tires and wheels of quite unusual size on a sports car. The tires measure 195/55, while large 21-inch wheels provide a contact surface on the road otherwise offered only by a much wider tire. In combination with the sophisticated axle geometry, this ensures agile driving behavior.

The extra-large wheel covers extending over part of the tire flanks add to the unique, very different look of BMW Vision EfficientDynamics from the side. The blade profile integrated in the wheels serves furthermore to reduce the negative effect of the turning wheels on the overall aerodynamics of the car. In all, these features optimizing the aerodynamic qualities of the car give the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car a very low drag factor (CX) of just 0.22.

Technological look as a strong impression of intelligent lightweight construction.

In both exterior and interior design, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics stands out clearly as a strong spearhead in technology. Many components of the vehicle are presented in full view expressing the “transparent” character of the car as a powerful visual feature of lightweight technology. The chassis and suspension of BMW Vision EfficientDynamics are made completely of aluminum; the roof and the outer skin on the doors are made almost completely of a special polycarbonate glass automatically darkening as a function of the light shining on the car.

Measuring 181.1″ in length, 74.8″ in width and 48.8″ in height, this unique concept car offers ample space for up to four passengers and their luggage. Thanks to the consistent lightweight construction strategy applied on the car, curb weight is 3,076 lb, with the center of gravity remaining very low. In its power-to-weight ratio, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car is far superior to all other hybrid cars, achieving the same standard as extremely dynamic sports cars with a conventional combustion engine.

Carrying a maximum payload of 981 lb, this unique 2+2-seater is fully suited for everyday traffic. Luggage capacity of 5.3 cu ft, in turn, allows the driver and passengers to conveniently take along two golf bags. And to meet additional loading requirements the backrests of the two rear seats may be tilted down individually to provide extra storage space.

Emotional design through sculptural shapes and layering technology.

Reflecting the innovative drive concept of this unique car, the design of BMW Vision EfficientDynamics likewise takes a new approach in combining functional progress with a most powerful emotional impact.

This has been achieved through the close cooperation of BMW’s Design and Technical Development Divisions starting at an early point and continuing consistently throughout the entire development process. The result is a brand-new vehicle architecture with the drive components as well as the body and interior elements perfectly coordinated and matched to one another with maximum flexibility and individual style.

A fully integrated design philosophy also provided new options in using harmonized design principles connecting the exterior and the interior and providing an interacting effect between the two areas.

Sculptural design language giving BMW Vision EfficientDynamics a fully harmonized, complete look ensures the proportions typical of a BMW sports car. The front, side, rear and roof areas, for example, flow smoothly into one another. Dynamically contoured surfaces and shapes, in turn, create highly attractive light and shade effects accentuating the light and sporting character of the car in an emotional manner.

Layering technology developed by the BMW Group Design Division acts as the fundamental guideline in designing the exterior and interior. Applied for the first time in exterior design, this technology layers one surface on top of the other, creating very smooth seams and joints to reduce the number of components and, accordingly, the weight of the car. As a result, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics meets the most demanding aerodynamic requirements without using any additional body elements, simply through the structure of the surfaces optimized for a smooth flow of air.

Interior: innovative lightweight construction and unprecedented orientation to the driver.

In the design of the interior, innovative layering technology provides an unprecedented symbiosis of function and stylish shapes intentionally reduced to a minimum, consistently implementing and visualizing the lightweight principle also inside the car.

Specific components such as the central air vent not only serving to enhance motoring comfort but also acting as part of the cockpit, perform several functions in one. This multi-functionality is then presented visibly within the car, the use of particularly sophisticated materials providing a highly attractive combination of innovation in technology and quality clear to the eye and the touch of the surface.

This interaction of lightweight construction and individual well-being also comes out clearly in the design of the controls and switches, with a leather band, for example, running round the aluminum gear selector lever on the center console. Materials combining lightweight technology and all the qualities required are also to be admired all round the cockpit of BMW Vision EfficientDynamics, giving the car an unusually generous feeling of space for a 2+2-seater. The body-contoured seats, for example, are made up of a kevlar shell, a backbone structure, and seat padding with personalized fillings. Clearly, this combination alone ensures comfort at a minimum weight. The driver’s and front passenger’s seats are connected firmly to the center console to form a joint interior “landscape”, while the rear seats anchored on the floor would appear to be hovering in space. Natural materials and light colors on the seat upholstery and all interior linings underline the light, sophisticated and sustainability-oriented atmosphere within the passenger compartment.

The instrument panel is deliberately padded only where technical components have to be appropriately covered, thus making an important contribution to passenger safety in the event of a collision. The instrument cluster played a fundamental role right from the start in the design process, serving as the starting point for all surfaces within the interior and thus creating a particularly powerful rendition of that driver orientation typical of BMW.

Innovative light technology: providing clear signals to the outside and offering soothing ambient illumination inside in a unique symbiosis.

LED lights at both the front and rear end of BMW Vision EfficientDynamics provide an innovative combination of the symbols typical of the brand and clear design language oriented towards trendsetting technology. The distinctive look of the dual round headlights characteristic of a BMW is emphasized in particular by the use of LED technology. The rear lights are integrated also in their function into the design of the entire rear section, forming part of the rear air deflector and thus merging completely into the rear contour.

Extremely flat and compact, the rear lights are made up of innovative LED units forming a smooth and consistent red surface when not in use. Only when used do the respective light chambers take on the appropriate color such as yellow on the direction indicators. This innovative light technology also provides an intense symbiosis of the exterior and interior, again promoting and further refining the driving experience.

This is also why the ambient illumination of the interior comes with new features and qualities, the light sources within the passenger compartment being fed from the positioning lights at the side, the rear lights and the brake lights, thus changing the atmosphere created by the lights within the car as a function of driving conditions.

The optical impression conveyed by BMW Vision EfficientDynamics also results in other areas from the symbiosis of the exterior and interior, eliminating the conventional barriers between the two. The lines within the interior, for example, continue on to the innovative design of the engine compartment lid, while in its shape the third brake light positioned higher up on the car follows the structure of the glass roof and tapers to the outside where the roofline moves down gently to the rear.

Overhead doors for convenient access to all seats.

The doors on BMW Vision EfficientDynamics open up like bird’s wings, turning on pivots in the front roof column at the level of the side direction indicators. Since the car has no B-pillars, the large door cutouts ensure convenient entry also to the rear seats. The pivots on the doors also provide the base for the exterior mirrors, thus forming an ideal combination of function and aesthetic design. The structure of the doors is also characterized by several layers of materials on top of one another and the optical and functional symbiosis of the interior and exterior this technology is able to offer. Made up of three layers, the overall structure comprises the outer glass surface, an interim load-bearing layer, and the interior cover with its particularly smooth shapes and fl owing forms clearly visible to the passengers, layering technology again, therefore, opening up new perspectives.

The large glass surfaces extending far down on the body also provide a strong optical impression of the low seating position close to the road. And at the same time a stable sidebar ensures the body stiffness and crash safety naturally required on every vehicle. Flowing to the inside at its central point, this safety element also serves as an armrest. This interplay of the three layers also helping to minimize the weight of the car continues on the trim bar running along the door and extending out of the armrest, finally flowing into the outer door opener on its path from inside to outside.

Clear focus on the essential: 3-dimensional Head-Up Display.

Layering technology is also used on the displays in the instrument cluster and in the Head-Up Display developed to an even higher standard on BMW’s new concept car. The Display now creates a powerful impression of three dimensions, at the same time providing the option to present various signals more in the front or more in the background, depending on their relevance and current driving conditions.

The Head-Up Display projects information important to the driver on to the windscreen. Indeed, innovative presentation technology even allows the superimposed presentation of several views in three dimensions, keeping, the gauge graphics visible in the background while the latest information on route guidance or warning signals from BMW Night Vision, for example, are shown in the foreground.

The sequence in which such signals appear depends on the driving mode chosen by the driver, the display technology, again depending on the driver’s personal preference, enhancing a particularly sporting, a more comfort oriented, or an efficiency-based style of motoring. Through its design alone, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car clearly shows that highly efficient individual mobility may by all means be presented in emotional style. BMW already offers models in all vehicle segments which, compared with the competition, ensure the lowest level of fuel consumption and emissions combined with superior power and performance.

And now BMW Vision EfficientDynamics confirms BMW’s commitment to offer a perfect combination in future of unique driving pleasure and optimum qualities in the responsible use of natural resources.

In the design process the need for sustainable management is borne out most clearly by the GINA (Geometry and Functions in N-fold Augmentation) concept developed by the BMW Group. In this case maximum creative freedom sets the foundation for innovative solutions challenging the conventional and meeting the requirements of the future. This makes the GINA principle particularly well-suited for developing visions for the future reflecting both the wish for emotional style and individual character as well as the quest for sustainable management and efficiency. Forward-looking energy management adjusting to individual requirements.

With the individual system components on board BMW Vision EfficientDynamics being networked with one another, conditions are perfect for implementing a forward-looking system of energy management using information gathered by the sensors of the driver assistance units fitted in the car. Data provided, for example, by the rain sensor or Active Cruise Control with its Stop & Go function as well as by the navigation system, and subsequently evaluated by the central control unit, offers an overview of current and upcoming driving conditions. Then, evaluating such data, the on-board computer is able to forecast driving conditions on the stretch of road immediately ahead, such calculations serving to prepare the car for upcoming requirements and make efficient use of the energy available through optimum operation of all systems.

Should the high-performance central computer establish, for example, that the driver is about to take the motorway, the power used for running the cooling system is reduced for a certain period in advance, on the assumption that the short increase in coolant temperature resulting from such an energy-saving measure will quickly be set off by the higher speed of the car on the motorway. Another example of such pre-conditioning is the regeneration of energy from the air conditioning, from Electronic Power Steering and the Brake Assistant.

Notice anything different from the box image from the original? Wonder if the blood is a hidden innuendo of what Apple plans on doing to Windows 7?

Ever since I bought a BMW back in March, I've been wondering why I hadn't owned one sooner. Yes, there more pricey but the customer service and quality is well worth it. I also own a Ford Edge, which is a great SUV, however the customer service at Ricart is absolutely appalling and has turned me off from buying from a "superlot" ever again. BMW has bent over backwards making sure that I love the car. I was prepared to be ignored walking in the door since I'm young and figured that the sales guys would just think I was dreaming. I've been so impressed I'm considering getting rid of the Edge for a BMW SUV... (I'll probably have to live out of it since I won't be able to afford the mortgage anymore).

Last week I was only back from vacation a day before I had to hop a plane and head to Chicago on a business trip. The whole time I was on vacation I was dreading the trip because I had to give a presentation and also I didn't even have time to collect my thoughts. The conference consisted of 35+ attorneys and even tho I'm not an attorney, I was summoned because I'm the "Director of Technology" for our firm and my boss wanted me to give a presentation on platform independence and cloud computing for the the other attorneys.

Looking back on it, Chicago was very cool. When I arrived on Thursday evening, all the attorneys (except my boss, because he decided to drive and was late) got together and we went on a architectural boat ride around Chicago. On Friday, when it was my turn to present, I totally kicked ass (even without practicing). All the attorneys were impressed and a bunch later told me they really enjoyed my talk. After the conference was over for the day on Friday, we all went to Gino's Pizza and Saturday it was the Brazilian steak house and Blue Man Group. Chicago is a beautiful city I'm already thinking about a long weekend in the fall and flying back.

Me at the Brazilian Steak House (which in itself was worth the trip). They have 14 different kinds of meat and these guys come around and carve off as much as you want. It was a total meat-a-palooza!

California Vacation

The trip to California was amazing. The first two days were spent in Hollywood and even got to experience Grace Jones at the Hollywood Bowl. I got to do just about everything on my sight seeing list except for Universal Studios, but that can wait till next time. I stayed with my cousin in Laguna Beach in a house with amazing views of the Pacific. I took over 1600 photos not including the tons of polaroids. Here are some of my favorite shots:

3D Photography

Fuji Film announced yesterday that they will be producing the first three dimensional camera without the need to wear special 3D glasses. This got me instantly excited and I just had to see some samples. Turns out, I had a bunch of 3D images all along I just never knew it. Most photographers take multiple shots of the same thing to ensure at least one of those shots will be in perfect focus with all the correct lighting. Now usually I trash the shots that didn't quite make it and just keep the best one. However, if you take two of the shots that are very similar and place them side by side you can usually see a 3D image. You trick your eyes kinda like those old magic eye images.

All the photos here are 3D: that is, you should face the screen, cross your eyes until you see a 3rd image. Focus (eyes still crossed) on the middle image: that's the 3D one! The first time you really have to work at it, make sure you're about 2 feet from the computer screen, but once you get it you'll be able to see them all in 3D. I'm so glad I discovered this technique, can't wait to photograph my California trip in 3D! Be sure to click on the images to make em bigger.

Tonight I wanted to do some photography but the weather was crapy out so I decided to do some indoor shots. At first, a few shots came out blurry and looked kinda cool so I figured I'd go that route. I love the color mixtures and soft flowing lines. The rules don't say every photograph has to be in focus. enjoy.

2009 Goodguys PPG Nationals

For the second year in a row the Goodguys Nationals got rained out. We got there around 9am and the rain didn't start till 11:30 so I was able to get a few shots in. Even with the bad weather, the turnout was huge with 6000+ cars & tons of people. I was contemplating going today as well since the weather is nice, however the tickets were $17 + $6 for parking so I decided to pass.

California Trip Itinerary

On July 25th, Jer and I are headed to California to visit my cousin, Nancy, who I haven't seen for 10 years. The last time I visited her was in NYC and it was an amazing trip. However, back then I cared less about photography and didn't take that many pictures. This time photography is the main goal. Nancy isn't expecting us until at Monday so Jer and I have two days to run wiled in LA area. I think we're pretty much settled on staying at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa for the two days as it will be right in the center of everything. Nancy got tickets to some event at the Hollywood Bowl on that Sunday night so we can just walk there from our hotel.

On that Monday, we'll pack up and head over to stay with Nancy in Laguna Beach for a week in her swanky cliff house. We want to get all the Hollywood / LA area attractions out of the way so we don't have to battle traffic during the week. I doubt this trip will have any relaxing part to it; I want to see and photograph as much as possible.

As of now this is our itinerary:

Would you trust a glass floor that’s an inch and a half thick when suspended 103 stories in the air? People in Chicago today can find out at the Sears Tower, which opened its new set of glass balconies for public viewing. “The Ledge,” as they’re collectively called, hangs 1,353 feet in the air. With transparent walls and ceilings, visitors say its like floating in the sky, and the view is, of course, spectacular. Don’t worry, those glass floor can withstand five tons, but just to be safe, jumping up and down is probably not a good idea.

How to display your old Polaroids

If you're a reader of my blog you'll know that I recently became obsessed with Polaroid photography. I've been keeping them in plastic boxes that I found at the Container Store for $1.50. I'd get them out every once and a while and look through them, but then I though there has to be a better way of displaying my retro images. I headed over to Target and bought two large poster frames and also picked up some photo corners at a local scrap-booking store. Using one of the plexiglass sheets from the frames, I lined up and stuck the Polaroids on it, then laid the other plexiglass sheet on top so the images were sandwiched in between. I did this because I wanted the Polaroids to look like they were floating. The frame fits 42 Polaroids and since I used photo corners, the images are easily swappable.

Apple's Hyperwall at the 2009 WWDC

At the WWDC (world wide developers conference) on Monday, Apple had a "hyperwall" on display which consisted of twenty 30-inch Apple displays. The screens were loaded with 20,000 of the most popular iPhone apps which would pulsate each time the app was download from the iTunes store via a live feed.

The hyperwall was built using Apples latest technology. It's powered by 20 Mac Pro towers each running the new Mac OS X Snow Lepoard.

Bugatti Type 57C is beautiful

The Bugatti Type 57C is as rare as it is beautiful, with just 710 built between 1934 and 1940. They’re all highly collectible and frightfully expensive, but this 1936 model is just a little more so because it is the car Ettore Bugatti himself drove.

The car goes on the block during the super-glitzy Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August, and auction officials think the final bid could top the record-setting $12.1 million paid last month for a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa.

And like that stunning Ferrari, Bugatti’s Bugatti has a rich history.

This particular 57 is standard fare from the factory in Molsheim, France, which is to say it’s beautiful. It features a 3.2-liter straight-eight under that long beautiful bonnet - Ettore loved the straight eight - and a luxuriously appointed interior. The car is unusual for its bright green on black two-tone paint job. Most Bugattis were French racing blue, Ettore being quite the nationalists, you know. Odd, given that he was an Italian ex-pat.

Factory employees built Chassis No. 57335 as a birthday present for Le Patron’s 55th birthday. His son Jean penned the one-off body and it is believed to be among the last of his designs. The car was jealously cherished by the company, which went to great pains to protect the car from the Germans during World War II. After Ettore’s death in 1947, the car returned the factory and was meticulously maintained.

The car has has no more than a few owners since it left the factory for the last time in 1950, and not one of them has changed the car in any significant way. It is entirely original and much the same as when Ettore last drove it. Like that amazing Type 57S Atalante Coupe that was found in a barn and auctioned for $4.53 million in February, this car may be one of the best original-condition Bugattis left on the planet.

Currently I only have eight dogs but one is expecting puppies and I am very excited by this. I am hoping for a litter of at least ten as this is the number required to participate in dog sled racing. I have read every Jack London novel in preparation and have constructed my own sled from timber I borrowed from the construction site across the road during the night. I have devised a plan which I feel will ensure me taking first place in the next national dog sled championships. For the first year of the puppies life I intend to say the word mush then chase them violently around the apartment while yelling and hitting saucepan lids together. I have estimated that the soundproofing of my apartment should block out at least sixty percent of the noise and the dogs will learn to associate the word mush with great fear so when I yell it on race day, the panic and released adrenaline will spur them on to being winners. I am so confident of this being a foolproof plan that I intend to sell all my furniture the day before the race and bet the proceeds on coming first place.

No. I have a goldfish but due to the air conditioner in my apartment being stuck on a constant two degrees celcius, the water in its bowl is iced over and he has not moved for a while so I do not think he is capable of disturbing the neighbours. The ducks in the bathroom are not mine. The noise which my neighbours possibly mistook for a dog in the apartment is just the looping tape I have of dogs barking which I play at high volume while I am at work to deter potential burglars from breaking in and stealing my tupperware. I need it to keep food fresh. Once I ate leftover chinese that had been kept in an unsealed container and I experienced complete awareness. The next night I tried eating it again but only experienced chest pains and diarrhoea.

You cannot play sounds of dogs or any noise at a volume that disturbs others. I am sure you can appreciate that these rules are for the benefit of all residents of the building. Fish are fine. You cannot have ducks in the apartment though. If it was small birds that would be ok.
